Title: CAPTAIN AMERICA CORPS
Issue Number: 1 (of 5)
Title Story: Missing In Action
Publisher: Marvel
Writer: Roger Stern
Artist: Philippe Briones
Colors: Matt Milla
Letters: Cory Petit
Cover Artist: Jimenez & Brown
Price (USD): $2.99
Release Date: Now On Sale
Genre: Super Hero

I got this one on impulse, just because of the title. I did not know what to
expect. Right from the start it was not what I expected. It begins in the Arctic
many years ago as some Inuits find a man frozen in ice. We can see he is a
soldier and before they can move it too far the body and ice block disappear in
a flash. More interesting than that is the man watching it all from afar. He is
named Tath Ki and he is an interdimensional traveler. He is concerned that Steve
Rogers' body has been removed from this particular universe. As he explains to
Uatu, the Watcher, this has happened in multiple universes and at an increasing
rate. Because Rogers is such a pivotal being in the history of Earth the
disappearances will have a ripple effect vastly altering reality in every
universe. One more disappearance convinces him to put a plan in play. Flash to
April 1941 as Captain America is prepping for his next mission. In a flash he
disappears. Next we see Bucky Barnes in the present putting down some fascist
terrorists. Ki appears and leads him through a door that is really a gateway to
another reality. It turns out he is assembling his own Captain America Corp. We
see Steve from the forties, Bucky, American Agent, the American Dream (Shannon
Carter) and from the future United Americas Commander A. Each is the Captain
America of their time and they will need to work together to help stop the
altering of all reality or even ultimate destruction - piece of cake! I like the
premise and the characters together as a team. As they set out into the altered
present to see just how much has changed they find a very different world.
Unauthorized masked people are subject to arrest as they soon see. They work
well as a team but they soon meet something bigger than life. This one is off to
a good start. The art is good enough to carry the story and there is some
friction among the characters but not enough to weigh things down in drama. It
looks to be a fun action series with some twists along the way. I like it more
than the typical Capt versus Nazis type story. I think you will too.

Title: FOSTER BROUSSARD: DEMONS OF THE GOLD RUSH
Issue Number: 1 (of 5)
Publisher: Red 5 Comics
Creator: Trevor Pryce
Writer: David Ziebart
Artist: Dan Glasl
Inker: Amber Gant
Colors: Adam Guzowski
Letters: Troy Peteri
Price (USD): $3.50
Release Date: NOW ON SALE
Genre: Adventure

The story begins in London in 1850. Ne'r-do-well Foster Broussard is about to be
hanged in the public square for a long list of crimes just short of murder. When
given his right to last words he appeals to the queen that he can get more gold
than in all of the Tower of London. So his journey to the USA begins. Not only
does he have plans to find the gold but he also has a plan to get away from his
appointed overseer that is very clever. The main plot follows Foster and his
partners to the Gold Rush time in California. While they are plotting their
strategy it seems Foster can't keep from getting involved with other people and
getting into much more trouble. Then there is a separate plot up in the
mountains where the mines are. Native Americans are used for cheap labor but on
older female is trying to warn the white owners that the land is cursed and doom
is coming. This has some elements of a good story but I do not feel it is
executed properly. Nothing really grabbed me enough to make me want to see more.
There are scene changes that are not smooth. I think in a different sequence the
two plots would make more sense. The art is good enough though some characters
are too similar to tell apart. I appreciate the effort but it is not worth it
for me.

Title: FLASHPOINT: DEADMAN AND THE FLYING GRAYSONS
Issue Number: 1 (of 3)
Title Story: The Show Must Go On
Publisher: DC
Writer: J.T. Krul
Artist: Mikel Janin
Colors: Ulises Arreola
Letters: Patrick Brosseau
Cover Artist: Cliff Chiang & Jared Fletcher
Price (USD): $2.99
Release Date: NOW ON SALE
Genre: Super Hero

Like all the FLASHPOINT books things are somewhat jumbled from what we are used
to. The cover pretty much tells you that the setting is a traveling circus. In
this case they are in what is left of Europe going from country to country and
avoid Atlanteans or Amazons. The Flying Graysons are all alive and headline with
Boston Brand as Deadman. The Graysons are a loving family dedicated to their
work and the extended family of the circus. Deadman on the other had is more
egotistical. He won't lend a hand to others so as not to damage his hands or
tear his costume. There is another among the troop that will be very pivotal to
the plot. He is Fate and yes he wears the helmet in the sideshow where he is a
mystic for the rubes. But in reality he sees more than they know. There is a
point when Boston grabs his arm and has a vision himself. But at the climax of
the issue it is reality that may be making that vision come true. With only
three issues to get to the point Krul has managed to introduce the players and
the situation, provide the feeling of the group dynamic and lay down the plot
that will explode next issue. The art is terrific as well. I think the main
thing I have found out about these tie ins is not to judge them by first
impressions of the name or the cover. This one is a gem.

Title: FLASHPOINT: LEGION OF DOOM
Issue Number: 1(of 3)
Title Story: Hot Blooded
Publisher: DC
Writer: Adam Glass
Artist: Rodney Buchemi
Inker: Jose Marzan Jr.
Colors: Artur Fujita
Letters: Dave Sharpe
Cover Artist: Miguel Sepulveda & Jose Villarubia
Price (USD): $2.99
Release Date: NOW ON SALE
Genre: Super Hero

In another timeline you would expect such a title to be about an organization of
master criminals with a secret hideout where they plot ways to take out the
heroes and perhaps eventually rule the world. Well, you've got the villains but
the secret hideout is really a prison for them with Amazo as a super guard who
can subdue any metas that arrive so that they can be fitted with colors that
suppress their powers. The population is divided into the metas and the regulars
who are just normal men without their gadgets. The prison is submerged in a
swamp in North Carolina and only rises to accept new prisoners. The main plot
follows one new prisoner - Heatwave. The issue opens with him killing half of
the Firestorm team right after they convert to civilian form. It is his mad
desire to attain real "fire" power by becoming part of Firestorm himself. He is
eventually captured by the greatest US superhero in the FLASHPOINT world, Cyborg
and sent off to prison to await execution. But even there he proves to be too
dangerous to other criminals and so he is shipped off to the Doom facility. By
the end of the book we see how resourceful Heatwave is in maintaining dominance
among the others and hatching a devious plot to escape that involves a super
powered being. How the plot is set in motion at the end of the issue is just too
ingenious to give away. This is a thriller that really gets into the psyche of
the super villain as he narrates his story. Whether he will actually escape and
what happens then is anyone's guess. The art is very good as it has been in all
of these event tie-ins. This one explores yet another aspect in this world where
time has changed everything. This is another one worth your time.

Title: FLASHPOINT: WONDER WOMAN AND THE FURIES
Issue Number: 1(of 3)
Title Story: The Arrangement
Publisher: DC
Creator: William Moulton Marston
Writer: Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning
Artist: Scott Clark
Inker: Dave Beaty
Colors: Neal Ruffino
Letters: Travis Lanham
Cover Artists: Ed Benes w/Pete Pantazis

Genre: Super Hero

We have learned from the main book and other tie-ins to FLASHPOINT that the war
between Atlantis and Themyscira started with the assassination of Queen
Hippolyta and later the murder of Mera. This title finally shows how those
events developed. It starts fourteen years ago in this altered timeline where
both Themyscira and Atlantis are unrevealed to the outside world and thought to
be myths. Princess Diana lives on the island but against the wishes of her
bodyguard decides to take a sailboat out to explore what is beyond the clouding
mists that hide her home. As she begins to see the machinations of man on the
sea and in the air she is attacked by a giant sea monster and is rescued by
Aquaman. She is nursed back to health from her injuries in Atlantis and returned
to her people where members of both royal families see the possibility of
joining forces to aid mankind - to prevent them from destroying their own world.
To seal the deal Arthur and Diana have decided to forge the union of the
dynasties through marriage. But there are elements in both houses that do not
want to see this happen either through mistrust or trying to maintain the purity
of their race. And so as the big day arrives the two civilizations reveal
themselves to the world at large and thousands of dignitaries from around the
world are invited to Themyscira to witness the royal wedding. Before it can be
accomplished Hippolyta is assassinated and an Atlantean is framed for the deed.
Who that is, his fate, and the people behind it all I will leave for you to
discover. If you are into the whole FLASHPOINT war then you will want to get
this series as well as EMPEROR AQUAMAN to get the full story. Abnett and Lanning
do a great job in laying it all out and the art team does a great job bringing
it to life. You will want to get this one.

Title: KIRBY: GENESIS
Issue Number: 1
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Writer: Kurt Busiek
Layouts: Alex Ross
Artists: Jack Herbert and Alex Ross
Colors: Vinicius Andrade
Letters: Simon Bowland
Price (USD): $3.99
Release Date: NOW ON SALE
Genre: Super Hero/Science Fiction

The "zero" issue of this series is worth getting if you want to get the
background information on some of the fantastic characters that begin to appear
in this issue. However, it probably won't bring too much knowledge that will
explain the plot, which explodes with multiple characters in this first issue of
the series. The premise is that Pioneer 10 was sent off into deep space with a
plaque on it depicting two humans as men would hope to become - super hero type
larger than life characters (unlike the depiction on the real Pioneer 10, which
was the basic human male and female forms.) The human view in the story comes
from two lifelong friends who are now in college at Ericsson University in
Minnesota. Kirby is the boy who studies hard for a career in science. His female
friend Bobbi is popular, smart and more like a sister to him. The first few
pages get us more familiar with the two as Busiek uses the devise of having
Kirby talk to the reader to fill them in. As they argue about whether to study
or hit the bars on a Friday night something happens that will change everything.
Two giant figures appear over the skies of Minneapolis lighting up the night
sky. Everyone rushes to see what is clearly a visit of extraterrestrial origins.
After a long time they only utter the words, "show us" and then disappear
through a gateway in the sky above them. But this is not the only event. Soon
reports emerge of a super soldier known as Silver Star fighting the Taliban, an
ancient civilization with perfectly preserved beings in chambers is found under
Chicago, a new continent is discovered and then disappears in the sea off Japan,
and even sightings of Bigfoot occur. In less overt fashion other beings clearly
not from around here make their way to Earth in Wyoming and Montana. Some appear
to be hunting the others. Finally Kirby and Bobbi unlock a mystery in an ancient
text that results in an amazing transformation. Kirby has already concluded that
the two mystery visitors at the start are likenesses of the sketches on that
plaque on Pioneer 10. Are the aliens trying to look like us? What about all
these other characters and happenings? Busiek is setting up a variety of
characters and many possible plots. Where it goes from here will be exciting.
The art is a delight to see. Ross and Herbert have taken the Jack Kirby designs
and done them justice in this all-new work. While there is much to be explained
before the meat of the plot is revealed the first chapter makes it enticing
enough to stay with for a while.

Title: FLASHPOINT: EMPEROR AQUAMAN
Issue Number: 1 (of 3)
Title Arc: Flashpoint
Publisher: DC
Aquaman created by Paul Norris
Writer: Tony Bedard
Artist: Ardian Syaf
Inker: Vincente Cifuentes
Colors: Kyle Ritter
Letters: Jared K. Fletcher
Price (USD): $2.99
Release Date: Now On Sale
Genre: Super Hero

The world of Flashpoint has been established as a world at war. Everything seems
to revolve around waging the war or trying to stop it. So naturally the mini-
series about one of the two leaders of that war is a story you might not want to
miss if you are sampling the various titles. It opens rather grimly as we see
Aquaman swimming among the bodies high above the now sunken city of Rome. When I
first heard that half of Europe was sunken in this alternate timeline I wondered
how it was accomplished. The weapon used is revealed in this issue and not only
was I surprised but also thought it was clever. That was eight months ago. Today
Wonder Woman's Amazons in New Themyscira are elevated on a pillar of stone that
is well above the flooded lands but so far invulnerable to the Geo-Pulse weapon
that sank Western Europe. Why that is so is also revealed. The story this issue
is how Aquaman with the help of Mera obtained the weapon and it leads up to what
he is planning to do next. I found this plot fascinating. Seeing one of the
pillars of the DC pantheon waging global war with another is something that
seems impossible to reconcile amicably. Right now it seems like more destruction
is on the way with many doubting if mankind can survive. The art is superb in
layout and detail. There are some really interesting visuals to go with a strong
story. While the main title, FLASHPOINT, deals with a few people trying to get
the world back the way it was. This one gives us the reality of the way it is
right now and what it might become very soon. It is a perfect compliment and a
must read.

Title: FLASHPOINT: ABIN SUR-THE GREEN LANTERN
Issue Number: 1 (of 3)
Title Story: Emerald Isolation
Title Arc: Flashpoint
Publisher: DC
Writer: Adam Schlagman
Artist: Felipe Massafera
Colors: Rod Reis
Letters: Dave Sharpe
Price (USD): $2.99
Release Date: NOW ON SALE
Genre: Super Hero

Another mini-series connected with the FLASHPOINT event concerns the Green
Lantern Corp of this alternate timeline. Because the timeline was changed in the
past the current GL of sector 2814 is Abin Sur. The first issue of this book
tells some of his story and as fate would have it has him crash landing on
Earth. As it opens he is fighting a Manhunter when Sinestro, his brother-in-law,
visits him. A war is going on against the Black Lanterns and Sinestro wants Abin
Sur to stop them as they have already consumed over 200 space sectors. But the
Guardians have a more important mission for him. They have been watching Earth
and see a world in a self-destructive mode. But Earth is the protective home of
the White Entity (see BLACKEST NIGHT and BRIGHTEST DAY for more on that) and
they want Abin to retrieve the entity as it is the most important being in the
universe. This Abin Sur has a strong imperative to save all life so he is
determined to prioritize the saving of Earth rather than the entity. This issue
explores his relationship with Sinestro and his dead sister. The story will move
forward as he heads to Earth and Sinestro seeks out information from another
familiar character. While this storyline may not be as critical to the main book
as EMPEROR AQUAMAN is it is still interesting and entertaining. The art is
executed well. With all the various tie-in titles in this event there is
something for everyone. GL fans will definitely go for this one.

Genre: Teen Drama

This is not a title I would normally buy but it is different from my usual
reading material so it deserves a look and a review. The setting is the Wayne
Tennis Academy where Millie Collins is at the bottom of the class and currently
getting her butt whipped in the final match of the month by Maya Benjamin, the
star of the academy. Each girl has her own personal coach and right away we get
to see that Millie's is more absorbed in finding a better player than helping
his current charge. On the other side Maya's coach shows more emotion about the
one point Millie scored than in the fact that Maya wiped her out in straight
sets - she demands perfection. Her Aunt who is footing the bill forced Millie's
coach, Dean, on her. Naturally Dean tells the aunt that Millie's failure is from
lack of work, not his zero coaching skills. At this juncture Millie is on the
verge of being cut from the school and she needs to convince the Principal and
her staff that she needs to remain, that she can win. She is given one last
chance. It is at this point that a has been coach named Walt appears promising
he can change her fate and make her a better player. The story has a lot of
humor and teen angst. It flows pretty smoothly and does not end the chapter the
way you think it might. The art has a Manga style to it that is executed in good
fashion. It is rated for all ages and should appeal to younger readers,
especially younger females. But I think anyone who likes well-done comics can
appreciate the craftsmanship in story and art that this one brings to the racks.

This comic deals with the famous monsters of film land. The twist is these
favorites of the silver screen are not actors in heavy makeup and prosthetics
but actual monsters. The main characters in the drama are a werewolf named Carl
and a has-been science fiction actor named Travis. They are pondering the
headline detailing the death of a friend, Devil Fish, who looks like the
Creature from the Black Lagoon. Carl has just done a direct to video called "Dr.
Wolfman and Travis was relegated to a cameo in the remake of his famous series
that sounds similar to Star Trek. They are not the only ones down on their luck.
The book is filled with other bygone stars like the Invisible Man, The Mass - a
Blob type creature - and Tempest an aging lady vampire. There is a loose thread
of a plot as the Invisible Man is threatening to release a monster sex tape.
Travis and Carl round up their monster friends to try and stop him but somebody
beat them to it. The best thing about this one is the art, which is not
spectacular but kind of reminds me of Sergio Arragones in a way. There is
nothing laugh aloud funny and the plot meanders about through the book. I think
it has limited appeal but your mileage may differ.

Title: MYSTERY MEN
Issue Number: 1 (OF 5)
Publisher: Marvel

Genre: Noir/Horror

The story is set in New York during the depression. A period Robin Hood type
known as the Operative secretly robs from the very rich to give to the poor. He
is the charming Dennis Piper and he is seeing the rising star of Broadway, Alice
Starr. But Alice has another admirer whose appearance is somehow magically
masked. We see him as a grotesquely wrinkled old man but those in the comic only
see a young military man and then forget him altogether. We know he took her to
a boat for nefarious purposes. Imagine Piper's surprise when he reads of her
death in the newspaper. He barely escapes the crooked cops who want to frame him
for the murder and when he tries to hook up with a private eye he can trust
another victim is murdered. Before the peeper died he led Dennis to Alice's
friend and the circle keeps getting tighter. Lucky for Dennis there is a masked
vigilante known as the Revenant watching out for him. The tale is fast paced and
the art is very stylish in the appropriate manor. The mysterious general who
killed Alice has connections with the supernatural alluding to a plan with
larger motives. I found it entertaining fiction that held my interest
throughout. The creators promise this series is firmly planted in the Marvel
Universe so we may see characters from those early years later in the story. If
you like crime fiction with a splash of the occult mixed in this one is for you.

Title: GREEN LANTERN MOVIE PREQUEL: KILOWOG
Issue Number: ONE-SHOT
Title Story: To Build a Better Lantern
Writer: Peter J. Tomasi
Artist: Carlos Ferreira
Inker: Silvio Spotti
Colors: Nathan Eyring
Letters: Rob Leigh
Price (USD): $2.99
Release Date: NOW ON SALE
Genre: Super Hero

The other Green Lantern book I picked to review this week is one of the sequels
to the GREEN LANTERN movie just hitting the theaters. As with most comic-based
movies this one will have slightly different continuity and so the comics
related to the movies should not be taken as within normal DC continuity. This
prequel takes a look at the Corp rather than the characters based on Earth.
Obviously the lead character is Kilowog, the trainer of the new Green Lanterns.
The story is pretty straightforward. There is a class of newly selected GLs and
it is his job to see that they learn how to use the most powerful weapon in the
universe as well as have the right judgment to do the job placed in their hands.
They have to get past him to become a full-fledged Green Lanterns. It is an
interesting batch of recruits with their own personalities and motivations. As
another part of the story there is another Green Lantern, Atey, who has a
natural ability to see the future. Though her vision is not clear she has never
had such intense visions of impending doom over such a short time. No doubt this
alludes to the main plot of the movie so it is integral to this being a prequel.
The issue ends with news reaching OA of Abin Sur's death and for the first time
a Green Lantern has been selected from the planet Earth. But most of the book
involves Kilowog training the rookies and putting them through a series of
tests. One in particular is very cleverly devised to teach them the importance
of following orders. The script is just right and does not get bogged down in
anything to fill space. The art is up to snuff as well. It is not essential to
read this comic before seeing the movie. For those who have never read a Green
Lantern comic it might aid their understanding when they do see the movie. I
think it is a good comic on its own.

According to a survey conducted by Esquire Magazine in 1965, which two

Title: WORLD OF FLASHPOINT
Issue Number: 1 (OF 3)
Title Story: This Is the World We Live In
Publisher: DC
Writer: Rex Ogle
Artist: Eduardo Francisco & Paolo Siqueira
Inker: Eduardo Francisco
Colors: Stefani Renee
Letters: Travis Lanham
Cover Artist: Brett Booth & Andrew Dalhouse
Price (USD): $2.99
Release Date: NOW ON SALE
Genre: Super Hero

This is one of the first set of FLASHPOINT mini-series that flew off the shelves
last week. This one takes place mostly in Europe, somewhere deep in what is left
of the Swiss Alps. It opens just before the eastern half of Europe was sunk by a
tidal wave generated by Aquaman. There is a war going on in this world between
Wonder Woman and Aquaman. This story follows some of the human survivors as they
attempt to find a way to stop the war before more of humanity is wiped out. The
story centers on Traci, whom is a mystic. If you have read some issues of MADAM
XANADU you would be familiar with her I guess. But that is okay. We get the idea
right from the start when the tidal wave hits and she saves her dad by
teleporting them both that she can do magic. Since this series is only three
issues long we get right to the point but still get some character development
along the way. Traci's dad is part of a major brain trust, H.I.V.E., involving
leaders from various countries. At the climax Traci discovers their plan. Now
she has a major choice to make. One neat part of this issue is the giant map of
the world in the meeting room. It shows what is left of Europe but also which
parts of the world are now controlled by various powers. It gives you the big
picture of just how different things are in the World of Flashpoint. There is
also a brief recap of how the war came about and even a hint of where things are
heading. I think it is a good compliment to the main story. The art is pretty
decent. The team handles a lot of characters and situations well. I'll stick
with this one.

Title: STATIC SHOCK SPECIAL
Issue Number: One-Shot
Title Story: I Am the Future
Publisher: DC
Creator: McDuffie, Cowan, Dingle & Davis
Writer: Felicia D. Henderson
Artist: Denys Cowan
Inker: Rodney Ramos, Prentis Rollins & John Stanisci
Colors: Lee Loughridge
Letters: Dave Sharpe
Cover Artist: J.H. Williams III
Price (USD): $2.99
Release Date: NOW ON SALE
Genre: Super Hero

This one-shot was planned before the untimely death of Dwayne McDuffie. It is a
story that is not that unusual in regards to Static and the Dakota. It revolves
around Virgil Hawkins Uncle Teshome who was framed for murders he did not
commit. Virgil Never gave up on him and even wrote letters to all levels of
government to get them to open the case. After ten years the conviction was
overturned. Virgil renews his friendship with his favorite uncle but Teshome's
troubles were not left behind. While he was in prison he fought another convict
maiming Blinder in the process. Blinder got out early and is a bang baby -
Dakota's name for people who got powers during the incident in Dakota Park a
year ago. Now Binder has a protective force field and is running designer drugs.
He also has a score to settle with Teshome. Static is naturally able to run
interference but he cannot overcome the force field. Later tragedy strikes the
family and Virgil does some soul searching to get the motivation he needs in the
end. It is not a bad story but nothing spectacular. It is good to see Cowan on
the art as it really hits the mark. In the back of the issue there is a tribute
to Dwayne McDuffie in the form of a short story with a clever twist. There are
also some gallery pages and tributes in text from Michael Davis and Derek Dingle
the cofounders of Milestone Media. This is a really nice addition to the
collection of fans of Milestone and Static.

Ok, I'm a sucker for female astronauts. For the purpose of this story there is
nothing but female astronauts. In the far future the Earth is rapidly running
out of resources. Mankind needs minerals, rare earths, radioactive elements that
are in short supply as are the fossil fuels and the alternate sources of energy
are not enough for its needs. Man must go to the stars to get more. The problem
is that the faster than light drive developed to make such a supply mission
possible has killed all the men who have tried it. It turns out only women with
3 'X' chromosomes can ride safely through the wormholes. It turns out there are
only fifty such women with the rare chromosomes and strangely they are all about
the same age. So the story begins with one of the ships on the first mission
light years away. As the assigned time to return approaches the ship enters the
wormhole and emerges somewhere else beside Earth orbit. While pondering why
things went wrong the captain sends two of the crew to investigate the planet
they are now orbiting. They find not only the indigenous life hostile but
something in the atmosphere is attacking the plastic in their suits and ship. It
will take some inventive thinking to escape back to the mother ship. Of course
the disintegration of the plastic is a good excuse for the two good looking
astronauts to loose most of their clothes. While Axel is really good at drawing
everything he is especially adept with the female form. The story is solid
enough that the partial nudity (PG 13 really) is not entirely gratuitous. The
bigger story is the ship is stranded somewhere out in space with no evident
reason why it happened. There is a small indication on the last panel that they
have another problem in the ship. This is solid entertainment in story and art.
I think those who take the time to try it will like it.

Eugene Markham might be called a supernatural detective. She practices magic
taking the name Odile after the dark swan in Swan Lake. We meet her on her
latest assignment in which she was asked to exorcise a haunted running shoe. She
sets up her spell and soon confronts a keres, an ancient death spirit normally
confined to a magic jar. This one got loose and looking for a new home found the
shoe. The sequence serves to introduce us to Eugene and the characteristics of
the Otherworld and its denizens. Later we see she lives a somewhat secluded
life, giving herself small pleasures and working on the somewhat strained
relationship with her stepfather. The main event is the next case she agrees to
take on. The so-called Gentry of the Otherworld abducted a fourteen-year-old
girl over a year ago. Her brother is frantic to find her and contacted Eugene's
agent to convince the Black Swan to cross over into the Otherworld in body to
rescue her sister. Something is not right lately. The keres she banished knew
her real name and the brother is convinced he is being watched for some reason.
As the first issue reaches a climax Eugene will have to confront yet another
demon. This story moved along quite nicely taking the time to introduce the
characters involved. Eugene is a believable person by the end and though she is
capable she is not a fearless hero charging in blindly. The art is complimentary
to the story with brilliant coloring giving it the right finish. I like this
comic and I think others will too.

This four-issue tie-in to Marvel's summer event concerns Namor trying to protect
his kingdom. His longtime nemesis, Attuma, is one of the Worthy and has attained
the weapon of Nerkkod, Breaker of Oceans. In the confrontation Namor is forced
to flee with Loa as Nerkkod takes over Atlantis promising to destroy it and its
citizens. Later on land Namor forms a plan and contacts Stephen Strange for
help. Dr. Strange determines they need more heroes and sends out a mystic
summons for the Defenders. But due to the problems around the world the only one
who shows up is Lyra, the She Hulk. It seems the four will have their hands full
when Nerkkod launches an attack on the land until an unexpected ally appears in
the end. While this ties in to the major plot it stands on its own. In fact the
event was planned with seven hammers of power going to the Worthy so that these
mini-series could explore each one individually. The element of fear is evident
in Namor's demeanor, a departure from his normal aspect. I liked the art and so
far the plot is making progress. The appeal of these characters makes it
different enough to be interesting. Let's see where it goes.

Title: REED GUNTHER

All AGES

This is a farcical adventure in the style of western myths like Pecos Bill or
Paul Bunyan. Reed Gunther is a wandering cowboy who travels with his pal
Sterling, who is a bear. This adventure begins as they camp for the night
unknowingly on a ranch run by a woman named Starla. At first she takes them for
rustlers and seeing Sterling the bear she is convinced it is the bear that has
been killing her cattle. Reed is forced to subdue her to explain their peaceful
intentions and soon they all learn the real culprit is a larger than possible
snake - I'm talking as big as a building here- living in the river. When it
attacks they also learn its skin cannot be penetrated by bullets. It will take
some imaginative planning to defeat such a large adversary. This is a very
clever story with a script that is funny and appealing. The trick is to keep the
reader engaged whether they are five or fifty. Shane does this well and Chris
has just the right style to emphasize some of the silliness without sacrificing
some measure of realism. For its genre it is superbly done and should be fun
for anyone who decides to give it a chance.

Title: KIRBY: GENESIS
Issue Number: 0
Title Story: Outward Bound
Publisher: Dynamite
Creator: Jack Kirby
Story: Busiek & Ross
Writer: Kurt Busiek
Artist: Alex Ross & Jackson Herbert
Colors: Vinicius Andrade
Letters: Simon Bowland
Cover Artist: Alex Ross
Price (USD): $1.00
Release Date: NOW ON SALE
Genre: Super Hero

This is an interesting project based on the works of the late Jack Kirby. What Busiek and Ross are doing is taking some lesser-known characters and mostly unused sketches and character designs of the King to craft a new Earth. The catalyst for the plot is the launching of the Pioneer 10 spacecraft in 1972. In reality it had a plaque of two very basic human beings as a way of identifying who sent this vehicle on its one-way voyage. For this story the plaque instead has a more richly drawn image of a super heroic male and female because the artist (tip of the hat to Jack) thought the best way to show who we are is to show our idealism. This is what some extraterrestrial life form would see. This "zero issue" lays the ground work for the main plot as the two protagonists a young boy named Kirby and his female friend Bobbi gaze at the stars and wonder the things Pioneer has seen and what strange phenomenon it is now approaching that its sensors cannot comprehend. Is it a cosmic anomaly, a gateway, or something else that suddenly appeared in its path where there should be nothing? The point of the Pioneer being the focus of the genesis of the plot is that it was a message sent out to ask in basic terms - is anyone out there? The question will be answered in the first issue but a glimpse of the numerous civilizations Pioneer passed through is shown as a teaser. Kirby originally asked this question relating to Pioneer 10: "Who will come a-knocking - the trader or the tiger?" If you like the imaginative characters Jack always seemed to have up his sleeve I think you will like this preview issue because it is packed with some background information on some of the characters that will appear from early concept sketches to finished art. So far we have not gotten heavy into the plot. We have just enough to get us interested. And for only a buck it is worth checking out.

One basic truth in comics that everyone one knows is that no one stays dead (well hardly - very few exceptions). This latest volume of ALPHA FLIGHT opens with a sentence telling us that during the Chaos War (one of those events I mostly sat out) some of the world's mightiest heroes were brought back from the dead. Some of those were former members of the Canadian super hero team Alpha Flight. So Guardian, Vindicator, Sasquatch, Shaman, Snowbird, Northstar, Aurora and Marrina are back together. If you've never read the earlier series of their exploits it won't matter too much as this is a fresh start. As we tune in various members get the call to respond to Department H. Most are doing routine things is their civilian identities. Aurora and Sasquatch are the first to respond to a scene at a hydroelectric plant where a terrorist in an Adamantium armored body is shutting down the power. At another location Guardian and Northstar have to face the mind controlling pheromone powers of another who is using the power outage for another attack to discredit a popular political party. The plot is about some basic bad guys with a plan getting thwarted by the good guys. Along the way some team dynamics, angst and romance are thrown in. The artwork is decent but nothing super. As a single issue it accomplishes telling a story with lead ins to future plots. It is just not all that compelling reading like another run of the mill super hero team book.

This comic is actually a sequel to the hit movie from 1990 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone based on a short story by Philip K. Dick. In that movie a construction worker named Douglas Quaid visited Rekall for a vacation of the mind. But this triggers his true memory as he learns he is actually a freedom fighter from Mars that has been relocated to Earth. As the movie plays out Quaid is successful in conquering the corrupt Mars based mining company thereby restoring some order to the planet. As the issue begins indeed Cohaagen, the administrator of the mines is dead but those loyal to him fight on against the rebels. Quad and the girl of his dreams Melina escape their attack to meet with their rebel friends in Venusville. It seems that the various rebel faction are in disarray as the central leader was also killed. It is up to Quaid to reach out to the military forces to end the fighting if he can. Also introduced this issue are the replacement Administrators - the son and daughter of the deceased Cohaagen. And it seems there is a warning beginning to be headed by some mysterious character in the wings - the Martians are coming! There is a lot of dialogue in the first issue but it actually serves to set the plot and tone for the series. You really don't need prior knowledge of the movie to understand what is going on here. It is good enough visually and it could lead into something more than just a sequel if handled correctly. I would give it a few issues to see what develops.

Title: CROSSED 3D
Issue Number: 1
Title Story:
Title Arc:
Publisher: Avatar
Creator: Garth Ennis
Writer: David Lapham
Artist: Gianluca Pagliarani
Inker: Chris Dreier
Colors: Digikore Studios
Price (USD): $8.99
Release Date: NOW ON SALE
Genre: Horror
Mature - Comics on the Edge

If you are not already a fan of the CROSSED series of series this offering may not change your mind. Certainly at this high price point the casual reader might not be curious enough to give it a try. Garth Ennis created a world where a mysterious plague hit the world and the majority of humanity turned into homicidal maniacs known as the Crossed for the distinctive rash the disease creates on their faces. As in other similar stories the small remainder of uninfected humans struggle for survival as the contact with any fluid from the Crossed infects normal humans. The story in this book revolves around one of the last surviving human doctors trapped in a New York skyscraper. A S.W.A.T. veteran, Lt. Hunt MacAvoy, assembled a team to go on a suicide mission to rescue the doctor in a city of millions of Crossed. While previous mini-series delves into the personalities and dynamics of survivors on the run this one focuses on a strike forces purposely charging into the madness. Since Lapham has written other Crossed stories he gives us the same sense of motivation for the characters - some are out for revenge, others are looking for redemption. We know at the start that this may be a hopeless mission with a slim chance of success. Like other Crossed stories it has lots of violence and depravity. Unlike the others this one is done in 3D. Strangely enough I found the 3D had less of a repulsive effect. The 3D lessens the impact of the color while emphasizing 3D for 3D sake often with guts spilling out of the page. The characters are interesting with most of them acting heroically and often selflessly for the sake of the mission. Even the actions of the Crossed take different turns due to the setting being in a major city. I think it is a good story in relation to the rest of the series and fans of the Crossed books will certainly enjoy it. The rest of you will have to judge for yourselves.

Title: STRANGE ADVENTURES
Issue Number: 1
Publisher: DC/Vertigo
Cover Artists: Paul Pope w/Lovern Kindzierski
Variant - Mark Buckingham w/Lee Loughridge
Price (USD): $7.99
Release Date: NOW ON SALE
Genre: Anthology/science fiction
Mature - Comics on the Edge

If ever there was an apt title for a comic this is it. Back in the day the original STRANGE ADVENTURES was more mainstream science fiction with some now familiar space heroes thrown in. This book is a collection of 9 short stories that are mostly science fiction. As I say with most anthologies there is good, bad and sometimes ugly stories.

CASE 21 is by Selwyn Hinds and Denys Cowens
This one is set in New Brooklyn in 2119 where the privileged live high above the streets. Commerce is controlled by the government and wealth is determined by tattoos that indicate your "market connect" and status value. Without a market connect there is no way to buy anything. On the lower levels - ground level - the M.A. Squad patrols to find citizens without tats to take away, never to be seen again. Jin was born on the upper levels but his family lost its market value and when the M.A.'s came for them he hid and joined the dissidents. Now he works secretly on the lower level helping remove tats for those who wish to hide their origins. It is a complex system and the plot revolves around a female client who wants her tat removed. The outcome of that transaction and what Jin is really up to is the gist of the plot. This is one of the better stories and Cowyn's art is familiar to me so I enjoyed it.

THE WHITE ROOM is by Talia Hershewe and Juan Bobillo
In another possible future people use a devise called the White Room to escape into their dreams. It is like a drug to many. The protagonist compares it to opium but it is more like a drug that loves you back. Sensations are over stimulated and people you see become people you want them to be. People don't fall in love anymore. They fall in love with the white room. She has a disturbing experience this time and by the climax of the story you wonder what and who are real and who is the dreamer. It is not a bad premise though difficult to follow at times and the art did nothing for me.

PARTNERS is by Peter Milligan and Sylvain Savoia
The art on this one is much more appealing as we meet two friends camping. We learn they have been in the wild and scrounging for food for three years. Aaron and Daniel are friends and have known each other for a long time. But the premise of the story is that one is real and one is an imaginary friend. We do not know which is which. Then one day Aaron told Daniel he has heard of a way to make the imaginary friend real. But if they go through this process how will they know it worked? They fear if they return to civilization the unreal person will not be seen by others and will cease to exist. This is a thinking story with no clear answer. I like it a lot.

ALL THE PRETTY PONIES is by Lauren Beukes and Inaki Miranda
This story takes place in Sao Paulo in the year 2017. People use a devise called MindRide to feel the experiences of others in their mind. There is a catalog of "Ponies" to ride from professional athletes to cops to exotic dancers to deep-sea explorers. You sit with the device on your head in the comfort of your home and ride the pony of your choice. Of course there are dangers such as overstimutaling and getting stuck in your pony or trying illegal hardware. But the players in this drama are unknowingly part of another danger and a darker secret about the MindRide system, as they will learn in the end. Another interesting premise that is well plotted and drawn.

ULTRA THE MULTI-ALIEN is by Jeff Lemire
This is one of the stranger ones when it comes to the art. In fact the style reminds me of Mike Allred. Ace Arin is a deep space explorer. On one mission he encounter four aliens of different species and planets. When they all fired at him at once with replicating rays a very strange thing happened. The four aliens all merged into his body. All four consciousnesses merged and body parts of each became the new body so Arin has the arm of one, the arm of another, the leg of a third and the leg of the fourth. He/they became an adventurer/hero like many others. There is homage in the form of a collage of other famous space heroes of comics to include Adam Strange, Star Man, Captain Comet and others. But what of the original man? While he is still a part of the consciousness he is no longer in control and can never go home. How this affects him and his possible future is explored. Not a bad story that has more to do with Arin's mind than any exploits or adventures. The art is also very detailed in layout, which adds to the overall feel of the plot.

REFUSE is by Ross Campbell
This apparently about one of those people you have heard about called hoarders. Selena is trying to get back her son but the social services workers won't let her unless she ends her obsessive hoarding and cleans up her apartment to prove she is "normal". Fair enough premise with very good artwork. But for me the story falls apart as we get deeper into her efforts to change her life. She gets injured in the clutter she is trying to clean up and her wound starts to grow into startling proportions. The finale is bizarre and is does not make sense. This is one I would classify as the "ugly" if not for the art.

POST MODERN PROMETHEUS is by Kevin Colden
This story is narrated in flashback by an odd looking little man with slits for eyes and almost claw like hands and sharp teeth. He explains he started as a lab experiment being constantly subjected to experiments in his infancy. He learned about the world from the newspapers used to line his cage. Soon he was caged with a mate and since his captors did not know of his hidden intelligence he devised a plan and carried out their escape. Their life on the out side and his ultimate fate are the gist of this one. While I felt this had promise at the start the story fell flat by the end with an unsatisfying ending. The art held up well though.

A "TRUE TALE" FROM SAUCER COUNTRY is by Paul Cornell and Goran Sudzuka
This one is about a man named George Adamski. In 1952 he encounter an alien claiming to be from Venus. He became a celebrity in the alien contact community and wrote books and made lectures. His story did not end with one encounter but he had continual contact and even went for rides in UFOs. But what did he really see or is it all a hoax? That is the idea here and it sort of sets things up and lets us ponder it. Okay for the art and execution but not really satisfying.

SPACEMAN is by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso
The last story gets top billing with a splash on the cover. It is called the first chapter in a series from the team that gave you 100 BULLETS. I found it very hard to follow mainly because Azzarello has the main characters talking n a future dialect with unfamiliar expressions. It is apparently a dissident future though not without technology. The art is unusual as it shifts from detailed close up work and more undetailed long shots. But as we get into the heart of the plot we learn a secret NASA project had for years been gene engineering future astronauts with expanded bone mass and flesh density to withstand long journeys in zero gravity. It is not clear that we are hearing and seeing two such subjects at the start of the story. In fact they are not in space but on Earth both trying to salvage a fallen satellite. How it ends and how this could lead into a series is a mystery for another time.

So this is a mixed bag with 80 pages for $8. IF you like stimulating ideas out of the ordinary it is worth the price.

Title: ASTONISHING SPIDER-MAN & WOLVERINE
Issue Number: 6 (of 6)
Publisher: Marvel
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Adam Kubert
Inker: Mark Roslan
Colors: Justin Ponsor
Letters: Rob Steen
Price (USD): $3.99
Release Date: NOW ON SALE
Genre: Super Hero

I reviewed the first couple issue of this series and found them an interesting twist on the relationship between Peter and Logan. When I saw the final issue out I decided to se how it wraps up. The two heroes got caught in a series of random time jumps together. They have been in caveman times and fought robots and even a living planet. As revealed in the introductory panel this issue it was orchestrated by a thug named the Czar to boost the ratings of an intergalactic reality TV show run by Mojo. It is not clear if previous issues included the latest exploit Peter is narrating or it is a writer's device to add an adventure by telling the details in flashback. It starts with Peter telling how Wolverine had been possessed by the Phoenix force and was intent on destroying all existence. Their current situation has them stuck in the old West with Peter settling down with the girl of his dreams, Sara Bailey. Logan lives among the Native Americans as a chief and the two seem resigned to their fate, as the indications are that this may be their last time jump. But there is another group that will impact their lives and they are called the Minutemen. They are a police force for the time stream. Their sudden appearance to set things right with the time stream Will shatter Peter's hope for a peaceful life in the distant past. I like the way the script ties up all the loose end with logical conclusions. Jason Aaron does a good job setting things right though there are lasting results. The art is very good as well. I think this one is worth looking back at the middle issues to get the full impact but the last issue reads like a story all on its own.
